Ella May Mason was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi on October 22, 1912. She earned both a Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. Mason was instrumental in building the art department at Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi, and taught there from 1940 - 1947 before moving to the University of Richmond, Richmond, Virginia. She accepted a professorship at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas in 1959 and retired from there in 1973. Mason was an accomplished artist and was actively engaged in the conception of the Ozarks Arts Alliance Show and assisted with the Sager Creek Arts Center. Her work is in the collection of the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, the Arkansas Historic Collection, and other institutions .
